Trying To Get Pregnant ?

Have you been trying to get pregnant ? With no answers from doctors ? That was us…

Hi, Shaun Here. I have decided to start a blog for those of us who have been trying to get pregnant, not me of course, but my wife Clare has been through a LOT.

We married on 25th Oct 1997 blissfully unaware of the tribulations ahead. We never gave a second thought about the possibility, or not, of getting pregnant. This must be one of a woman’s worst fears, The thought that she can not conceive. I’m cant imagine what was going through my wife’s head when she got the news.

After 3 years of trying it was in august of 1999 that we were told that we may never have a child of our own. Take that in for a minute, I could my wife almost faint. It was the worst day of our lives. That doctor had no compassion, no caring, we were just another couple who should go home and keep trying. Yes, that what he told us.

But Wait….

We decided to do everything we could to prove the doctor wrong.

We talked to 2 different doctors and eventually got referred to a fertility clinic. After all the tests (that should have been done by our first doctor) we got the news that my wife had PCOS. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. The name alone sent fear into out hearts but as the next few days and another appointment with our consultant we gradually came round to the idea that we could overcome this “little inconvenience” and maybe with some determination someday we could have a child.

Quick overview (From Wikipedia)

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common female endocrine disorders affecting approximately 5%-10% of women of reproductive age (12-45years old) and was once thought erroneously to be one of the leading causes of infertility

What We Done

Over the next few months my wife endured painful injections and a concoction of steroids and so on.., It was very hard on her and every month on the 14th day of each cycle we would try again. Nothing happened.

Then came the day when I arrived home from work to see the positive pregnancy test on the bathroom counter. Needless to say we were delighted, It was to be short lived. After 7 weeks my wife came out of the same bathroom with the news nobody ever wants to hear. I’m sure you have guessed by now. Our little child was no more.

This happened again, Twice !. That’s it I said, I could not see her go through this anymore. We started talking to adoption agency’s, We knew we had a stable loving home and we had the capacity to love and cherish a less fortunate child and bring them up as our own.

Things went slow… So much red tape and the monthly visits from the agency to confirm out suitability wre wearing my wife down again.

Fast forward to December 2003.

I came home from work, went to the bathroom to shower and there is was again, The Positive test. I didn’t know what to do, was it going to be another let down ?.

Ruby is Flower Girl for her aunt, 2009FF >> again to 19th Aug 2004.

1.50am in delivery suite 3 little ruby was born. A healthy 7lb 8oz girl with all the figures and toe’s.

It was the end of what was an exhausting and upsetting time in our lives. My wife didn’t stop smiling for weeks after. The moral of this story is, Dont Give Up. Educate yourself, get 2nd and 3rd and 4th opinions and keep trying. I know everybody says this !, But it is the most inspiring miracle you will ever witness.

1 Day old Eli and RubyConclusion

Ruby is now 5 1/2 and at school today, I’m sitting at my desk writing this and her mother is in the sun room breast feeding little Eli who was born in the same delivery suite at 5.46am on the 25th feb, only 11 days old. A second miracle !.

I have taken a few weeks off work to help out with the new arrival so hopefully I will get time to add to this blog. Please feel free to leave your comments or questions and I will get back to you.

P.S. Can you tell I’m not a writer ?, I’m a truck driver, and at the moment a very happy father of 2 wonderful children.

Thanks for reading.

Shaun.
